The three Weird Sisters must have cast some eternal spell on the immortal bard, for his readers, several generations down the literary lineage line, still quote his phrases (with "trippingly on the tongue" used as an adjective AND an adverb) at the oddest moments in life. When I am doing laundry, "out, out damn spot." When I want to zing my wife, only "dearest chuck" provides the correct balance of sarcasm and condescension. When I want to play meteorologist, only "so foul and fair a day I have not seen" will suffice (this last line forcing me to just now run to my concordance to check the correct order of "fair" and "foul"). When insomnia strikes, "to sleep, perchance to dream." Of course, the thousand variations of "to be or not to be [insert a host of "be" verb substitutions]. Yes...Shakespeare has insinuated himself into my psyche, and by the "grace of Grace," may he always remain. Thank you, Leanne, for reminding me of his proper place in my not-so-literary life!!<br /> Which segues into my final observation: reading Shakepeare is nice and DIRTY (pardon me...ribald) - the ultimate potty humor. Who can forget the image of the three Weird Sisters gamboling around a cauldron filled with disgusting objects and FARTING (yes, that's a meaning of WIND in England)? Or Petruchio's line to Katherine, "What? With my tongue in your tale" (Woof...time for a cold shower...) And what about Grumio's "three-inch fool" putdown (an observation, no doubt, millions of men have made in the men's locker room - poor guy)!! Yup! Shakespeare is fun...oh...and by the way...he has some good ideas too!! Thanks, again, Leanne. I eagerly anticipate your next installment. May you be as prolific as Shakespeare...and just as memorable!!Gatsbymarknoreply@blogger.com
